Building a computer from scratch used to be limited to PC
enthusiasts and people with formal training. With plenty of help materials and
tips on the Internet, building a computer is now possible for those with
minimal or no training on PC assembly. Is it better to build your own computer
instead of buying a complete set from the PC store? Both has its pros and cons.
In terms of ease of set up, pre-built PCs reign over
homebuilt PCs. With pre-built systems, the computer store takes care of
everything from hardware assembly to software installation. You go home with a
fully functional computer that simply needs to be plugged into a power source
in order to be ready for use.
The problem arises when you are building your own rig. In
this case, you will need to assemble all of the computer parts. You will need
to figure out which component fits into which slot, and where each end of a
cable should be attached to. Afterwards, you still have to install the
operating system (OS) and other software that you need.
The good thing about building your own PC is that you get to
choose your computer components and software. With pre-built systems, you have
little or no control over the computer parts that you get. You may be able to
buy more RAM, add an optical disk drive, or upgrade your graphics card. Most of
the time, however, you are left with the exact specifications of the system
that you purchased.
Many pre-built PCs also come with a lot of junk software
like antivirus and photo editing programs that expire in a month or so. These
software simply take up precious space in your hard disk drive. While the OS
that comes with a pre-built system is sold at a greatly discounted price, you
can actually save more by buying only those software and components that you
use.
Setting up your own PC involves a lot of work and time
especially for inexperienced builders. If you can handle the hassle of building
your own computer, you can be rewarded with a more powerful system that
perfectly matches your needs. If you are not computer savvy and would rather pla
